If you have spent any time on nail TikTok in the past two years, you have probably seen the letters BIAB. It is shorthand for Builder Gel, sometimes written as Builder In A Bottle, and it has become one of the most-requested manicures at Terra Beauty Center.
So what actually is it, and is it the right choice for your nails? Here is the full picture.
What is BIAB?
BIAB stands for Builder In A Bottle — a thicker, structural gel that is brushed onto the natural nail and cured under a UV or LED lamp. Unlike regular gel polish, which is purely a colour layer, builder gel adds a flexible, supportive structure to the nail itself.
Think of it as a clear (or tinted) shell that strengthens your natural nail without the bulk of acrylic.
BIAB vs gel polish vs acrylic
| Feature | Gel Polish | BIAB (Builder Gel) | Acrylic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adds strength | Low | High | Very high |
| Adds length | No | Optional (with tips) | Yes |
| Looks natural | Yes | Yes | Less so |
| Lasts | 2–3 weeks | 3–5 weeks | 3–5 weeks |
| Removal | Soak-off | Soak-off | File-off |
| Best for | Healthy nails, colour | Weak or thin nails | Long extensions |
The headline difference: BIAB strengthens your natural nail. Acrylic builds a new nail on top.
Who BIAB suits
Builder gel tends to be a great fit if you:
- Have thin, weak, or peeling nails that struggle to grow
- Want a natural look without the thickness of acrylic
- Are giving your nails a break from acrylic but still want durability
- Prefer fewer salon visits — most clients infill every three to five weeks
It is also popular with clients who want to grow their natural nails out. The gel layer protects the nail plate from everyday knocks and bends, which means breakage is far less likely.
Who might want a different option
BIAB is not always the right answer. Consider another service if:
- You want dramatic length — acrylic or Gel-X give a stronger extension
- You change your colour every week — a regular gel manicure costs less per visit
- You have sensitivity to gel products — talk to your nail technician about a patch test first
What a BIAB appointment looks like
A first-time Builder Gel set at Terra Beauty Center takes about an hour and includes:
- Nail cut, file, and shape
- Cuticle tidy
- Gentle prep of the nail plate
- Builder gel application — brushed on and cured under a lamp
- Optional gel polish colour or French finish
- Final shape and shine
If you already have BIAB on and just need a top-up, an infill takes around 45 minutes and rebalances the existing structure rather than starting from scratch.
Aftercare basics
To get the most out of your set:
- Apply cuticle oil daily — it keeps the nail flexible and helps the gel adhere longer
- Wear gloves when cleaning or gardening
- Do not pick or peel — book a proper soak-off removal instead
- Come back for an infill within three to five weeks; longer than that and you may need a fresh full set
How long can you keep BIAB on?
With proper infills, BIAB can be maintained continuously. Many of our regulars have been on builder gel for over a year. If you ever want a break, the soak-off process is gentle and leaves the natural nail intact.
Builder Gel (BIAB) sets and infills are available at Terra Beauty Center in Brunswick West. Book through our online booking system, or call us to talk through what would suit your nails best.
