Choosing Between Gel and Natural Manicure

By Terra Beauty Center · 13 May 2026 · 1 min read

The core difference

A natural manicure uses regular nail polish, which air-dries and typically lasts five to seven days before chipping.

A gel manicure uses gel-based polish cured under a UV or LED lamp. The result is a harder, shinier finish that can last two to four weeks without chipping.

Both are available at Terra Beauty Center. Here is how to choose.

Choose gel if you:

  • Use your hands heavily at work (keyboards, manual tasks, childcare)
  • Want a longer time between appointments
  • Prefer a high-gloss, chip-resistant finish
  • Have a special event and need the polish to last

Choose natural if you:

  • Like to change your colour frequently
  • Are giving your nails a rest between gel sets
  • Have nails that are currently thin or sensitive from previous gel wear
  • Prefer a lower-maintenance routine that you can touch up at home

A note on nail health

Gel manicures, applied and removed correctly, are safe for most nails. The key word is "correctly." Improper removal — peeling or picking — is the most common cause of nail damage. At Terra Beauty Center, we always soak off gel polish properly and recommend our clients do the same at home.

If your nails are feeling thin or brittle, a period of natural manicures with a strengthening base coat can help restore them before returning to gel.

How often should you come in?

Gel: Every three to four weeks for fills or removal and reapplication. Natural: Every one to two weeks, or whenever you want a fresh colour.

Your nail technician can advise on a schedule based on how quickly your nails grow and the current condition of your nail plate.
