Dermaplaning: Smoother, Brighter Skin Without the Downtime

By Terra Beauty Center · 10 June 2026 · 3 min read

Dermaplaning is one of those treatments that quietly racks up loyal regulars. There is no needle, no laser, no peeling skin for a week — just a noticeably smoother, brighter complexion you can wear straight to dinner.

Here is everything you need to know before booking your first session.

What dermaplaning actually is

Dermaplaning uses a single-use, surgical-grade sterile blade to gently exfoliate the surface of the skin. It removes:

  • A layer of dead skin cells that builds up on the face
  • The fine peach fuzz (vellus hair) that traps oil, makeup, and dust

The result is skin that feels softer to the touch, looks visibly brighter, and reflects light more evenly. Makeup also sits more smoothly afterwards because there is no fuzz catching the product.

What dermaplaning is not

A few things to clear up:

  • It is not waxing — peach fuzz grows back at the same fine texture, not coarser
  • It is not a chemical peel — there is no acid and no peeling skin afterwards
  • It is not microdermabrasion — that uses crystals or a diamond tip rather than a blade
  • It is not permanent hair removal — fuzz returns over two to three weeks

Who dermaplaning suits

Most adult skin types tolerate dermaplaning well. It is particularly good for:

  • Dull or congested skin that needs a reset
  • Makeup wearers who want a smoother base
  • Pre-event prep — weddings, photoshoots, big nights
  • Skin with fine texture that is hard to address with serums alone
  • Anyone bothered by visible peach fuzz in certain lights

Who should skip it

Dermaplaning is not suitable if you have:

  • Active acne with raised, inflamed lesions (the blade can spread bacteria)
  • Cold sores or open wounds anywhere near the treatment area
  • Eczema, rosacea flares, or dermatitis on the face
  • Sunburn or very recently sun-exposed skin
  • Used isotretinoin (Roaccutane) in the past six months
  • Recently had chemical peels, laser, or microneedling — wait at least two weeks

If you are pregnant, dermaplaning is generally considered safe but always check with your GP first.

What a dermaplaning appointment looks like

The Glow Treatment at Terra Beauty Center takes around 45 minutes and combines three steps:

  1. Cleanse — your therapist removes makeup and prepares the skin
  2. Express dermaplaning — single-use blade glides across the face at a precise angle, removing dead skin and fuzz
  3. Polynucleotide (PN) healing mask — supports skin barrier recovery, calms any redness, and deeply hydrates
  4. Medical-grade collagen LED light — supports collagen activity, evens tone, and improves long-term texture

You leave with skin that looks instantly smoother and ready for makeup or sunscreen.

What to expect afterwards

Most clients have zero downtime. You may notice:

  • Skin feels softer and looks brighter immediately
  • Mild redness for a few hours (usually gone by the next morning)
  • Skincare products absorb noticeably better
  • Makeup sits smoothly without catching on fuzz

There is no peeling and no recovery period.

Aftercare basics

For the first 48 hours:

  • Avoid direct sun and use SPF 30 or higher every day
  • Skip retinol, exfoliating acids, and scrubs
  • Do not exfoliate physically or chemically for 5–7 days
  • Use gentle, hydrating skincare — your skin barrier is more receptive than usual

How often should you book?

The smooth, glowing result typically lasts three to four weeks. Most regulars rebook monthly. Our 5-session package is built around this rhythm — five treatments spaced four weeks apart for noticeable cumulative results.

Will the peach fuzz really grow back the same?

Yes. Peach fuzz is a different type of hair to terminal hair (the kind on your scalp, brows, or legs). Cutting it at skin level does not change its texture or colour. This is one of the most common questions we get and the answer is reassuring: dermaplaning does not turn your peach fuzz into a beard.

Dermaplaning - Glow Treatment and the 5-session package are available at Terra Beauty Center in Brunswick West. Book through our online booking system or get in touch if you would like to know whether dermaplaning is a good fit for your skin.

Common questions

Will my hair grow back darker or thicker?+

No. Dermaplaning cuts fine vellus hair at the surface and does not change the colour, thickness, or growth pattern of the hair.

Is dermaplaning safe during pregnancy?+

Dermaplaning is often considered a gentle option, but pregnancy can change skin sensitivity. Please check with your GP or maternity care provider before booking.

How is dermaplaning different from microdermabrasion?+

Dermaplaning uses a single-use sterile blade to remove dead skin and peach fuzz. Microdermabrasion uses a device with crystals or a textured tip to exfoliate the skin.

Can I wear makeup the same day?+

It is best to keep skin clean and simple for the rest of the day. If you need makeup for an event, ask your therapist how to time the appointment.

How often should I book?+

Many clients book dermaplaning every three to four weeks. Your therapist can recommend timing based on your skin and sensitivity.
