Your First Brazilian Wax: A Step-by-Step Guide to What Actually Happens

By Terra Beauty Center · 17 June 2026 · 3 min read

If you are about to book your first Brazilian wax, you almost certainly have questions you do not feel like asking out loud. That is completely normal. Almost every client we see for the first time arrives a little nervous and leaves wishing they had booked it years ago.

Here is the honest, no-mystery guide to what to expect.

What a Brazilian actually involves

A Brazilian wax removes most or all of the hair from the front, between, and behind. You can choose to leave a small strip or triangle at the front if you prefer — your therapist will check what you want before starting.

The full appointment takes around 20 minutes.

Before your appointment: the prep that makes all the difference

A few simple things help the wax go smoothly and keep you more comfortable:

  • Hair length should be at least 5–7 mm (about the length of a grain of rice). Too short and the wax cannot grip; too long and it pulls more.
  • Exfoliate gently the day before — a soft scrub or konjac sponge helps lift any dead skin
  • Skip retinol and exfoliating acids in that area for 48 hours before
  • Avoid sunbathing or hot showers in the hours before your appointment
  • Wear comfortable underwear to your appointment (you will put it back on right after)
  • Time it around your cycle — skin is most sensitive in the days right before your period, so book a few days after if you can

If you are taking certain prescription skincare or have very sensitive skin, mention it when you book.

The appointment, step by step

Here is what happens from the moment you walk in:

  1. Quick chat — your therapist confirms what you want left or removed
  2. Privacy — you undress from the waist down (a towel is provided)
  3. Skin prep — the area is cleansed and lightly powdered to protect the skin
  4. Wax test — a small dab is applied first to check temperature and skin reaction
  5. Sectional waxing — wax is applied in small sections and removed quickly
  6. Tweezing — any stray hairs are tidied with tweezers
  7. Soothing finish — a calming gel or oil is applied to settle the skin

The whole thing is done in about 20 minutes. Yes, it is uncomfortable in places — but the sensation passes within seconds and is far less intense than most people imagine.

Tips to make it more comfortable

  • Breathe out during the strip removal, not in
  • Take a paracetamol or ibuprofen 30 minutes before your appointment if you would like to (and if it is safe for you)
  • Avoid caffeine just before — it can make the skin more sensitive
  • Communicate with your therapist — let them know if anything feels too sharp

What it feels like afterwards

For the first 24 hours your skin may feel:

  • A little tender or warm to the touch
  • Slightly pink in the treated area
  • More sensitive than usual

This settles quickly. By the next day most clients feel completely normal.

Aftercare for the first 48 hours

To avoid irritation and ingrown hairs:

  • Skip hot showers, saunas, and pools for 24 hours
  • Avoid the gym, running, and tight clothing for 24 hours
  • Skip fragranced products, exfoliants, and self-tan in the area for 48 hours
  • Wear breathable cotton underwear for the first day or two

Ongoing care between appointments

The best results come from a simple ongoing routine:

  • Exfoliate gently two or three times a week, starting 48 hours after your wax
  • Moisturise daily to keep the skin soft and reduce ingrowns
  • Use a dedicated ingrown hair serum if you are prone to bumps
  • Rebook every 4–6 weeks so the hair stays fine and the wax stays comfortable

The rhythm matters. Hair grows in cycles, and regular waxing means you are always catching the same growth phase. After a few cycles, the hair regrows finer and sparser.

Will it hurt less next time?

Yes. The first wax is the most intense because there is years of dense hair growing in different directions. By your second or third appointment, the hair is finer and more aligned, and the appointment is noticeably easier.

Common questions

Will it hurt?+

A Brazilian wax can feel uncomfortable, especially the first time, but each section is over quickly. Breathing out during each removal and avoiding caffeine beforehand can help.

How long does the hair need to be?+

Hair should be about 5-7 mm long, roughly the length of a grain of rice. If it is too short, the wax may not grip properly.

How long do the results last?+

Most clients rebook every four to six weeks. Regular waxing usually makes each appointment easier because the hair grows back in a more even cycle.

Can I get waxed on my period?+

Yes, if you are comfortable wearing a tampon or cup. Skin may be more sensitive during this time, so some clients prefer to book a few days later.

What if I get an ingrown hair?+

Do not pick at it. Gentle exfoliation after 48 hours, daily moisturising, and an ingrown-hair serum can help. Contact the studio if the area looks irritated or painful.
