Classic, Hybrid, Volume, or Mega? How to Choose Your Lash Extensions

By Terra Beauty Center · 27 May 2026 · 3 min read

Walking into a lash appointment for the first time can feel like ordering coffee in a country whose menu you cannot read. Classic? Hybrid? Volume? Mega? D curl? 0.07?

Here is the plain-language guide we use at Terra Beauty Center to help clients pick the right set.

What lash extensions actually are

A lash extension is a single synthetic or silk fibre bonded to one of your natural lashes with a medical-grade adhesive. They are not glued to the skin, and they shed naturally as your own lashes shed (every six to eight weeks).

Different styles use different ratios of extensions per natural lash, and that ratio is what changes the look.

The four main styles

Classic Lash Extensions

1 extension on 1 natural lash.

Classic is the most subtle option. You get definition and length without much added volume. Think "I slept eight hours and was born this way" rather than "I am wearing lashes."

Best for: first-timers, professional settings, anyone who wants a natural look.

Approximate appointment time: 1 hour.

Hybrid Lash Extensions

A mix of classic singles and small volume fans.

Hybrid sits between classic and volume. You get a textured, slightly fluffy look with more density than classic but without the full glam intensity.

Best for: clients who want more than classic but less than full volume; a soft glam look.

Approximate appointment time: 1 hour 10 minutes.

Volume Lash Extensions

Multiple ultra-fine extensions fanned together (3D to 6D) and placed on each natural lash.

Volume gives a fuller, denser look that is still lightweight because each extension is finer than a classic one. The effect is dramatic but not heavy.

Best for: special occasions, clients with sparse natural lashes who want fullness, anyone who loves a defined lash line.

Approximate appointment time: 1 hour 20 minutes.

Mega Volume Lash Extensions

The boldest set: 8D to 14D handmade fans for maximum density.

Mega is the darkest, fullest look on offer — a true statement lash. The fans are still ultra-fine (so the set stays comfortable to wear), but the visual impact is significant.

Best for: brides, photoshoots, clients who genuinely love a dramatic lash and do not want to fuss with mascara.

Approximate appointment time: 1 hour 30 minutes.

How to choose

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. How natural do you want to look? Classic at one end, mega at the other.
  2. What does your daily makeup look like? If you skip mascara, lean fuller. If you wear a soft eye, lean lighter.
  3. How much upkeep can you commit to? All styles need infills every two to three weeks for full retention.

If you are not sure, book the Custom Lash option. Your lash artist will assess your eye shape, lash health, and preferred style during the appointment and design a set specifically for you.

What to expect on the day

  • Arrive with clean lashes — no mascara, no eye makeup
  • Plan for between 60 and 90 minutes lying still with your eyes closed
  • The process is relaxing — many clients fall asleep
  • You will leave with finished lashes ready to wear

Aftercare that actually matters

For best retention:

  • Keep them dry for the first 24 hours
  • Cleanse the lash line daily with a lash-safe foam (your artist will recommend one)
  • Avoid oil-based cleansers and makeup removers near the eyes
  • Do not rub or pick — let your natural shedding cycle do its job
  • Book an infill every two to three weeks if you want to maintain the full look

When to come back for an infill

A lash infill within two to three weeks will refresh grown-out extensions and bring the set back to full density. If you wait longer than three weeks, your retention will likely be under 30 percent and the appointment will be charged as a new full set.

Common questions

How long do lash extensions last?+

A full lash set usually looks best for two to three weeks before an infill is needed. Natural lash shedding, aftercare, and lifestyle all affect retention.

Can I wear mascara with extensions?+

Mascara is usually unnecessary and can shorten retention, especially if it is oil-based or difficult to remove. Ask your lash artist before using any eye makeup over extensions.

Will lash extensions damage my natural lashes?+

Lash extensions should not damage natural lashes when they are applied at the right weight and isolated correctly. Damage is more likely when lashes are too heavy or picked off at home.

How much do infills cost?+

Lash infill pricing depends on the style and how much retention remains. Our online booking system shows current pricing before you confirm.

Can I cry, swim, or shower with them?+

After the first 24 hours, normal showering is fine. Swimming and tears can affect retention, so cleanse gently afterwards and avoid rubbing the lash line.
